, - All five starters scored in double figures as the men's basketball team dropped Vanderbilt from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 92-83 win Saturday night (Dec. 10) at Memorial Gymnasium.
Senior James White and freshman Devan led the Bearcats (4-2) with 18 points apiece as UC snapped Vanderbilt's 28-game non-conference winning streak at Memorial Gymnasium. White scored 16 in the first half, while Downey used his quickness, both offensively and defensively, to score 16 of his points in the second half, helping UC snap its two-game losing streak in its first road contest this season.
Eric Hicks added 13 points and eight rebounds, but suffered from foul trouble throughout the second half. A late technical foul, his fifth personal, sent Hicks to the bench with his first career disqualification.
Armein Kirkland scored a season-high 13 points, while Cedric McGowan added 10.
UC head coach Andy Kennedy used just three players off his bench, getting nine points each from Jihad Muhammad and Chadd Moore. was making his first appearance this season after sitting out the first five games for his participation in a summer league.
The win was UC's first road victory against a Southeastern Conference opponent since an 82-67 triumph at on Dec. 9, 1995.
UC scored the first eight points of the game on a White three, a layup and a three-point play from Hicks.
saw its lead inflate to 16 late in the half and UC took a 49-41 lead into halftime. The Bearcats then used a 14-5 run to push its lead to 63-46 in the opening minutes of the second half and maintained a 10-point lead until the final minute of action.
The Bearcats forced 17 Vanderbilt turnovers and converted those into 26 points. UC also outscored the Commodores, 46-32, in the paint.
Vanderbilt was led by Derrick Byers, who scored a career-high 25 points. Julian Terrell had 11 points and grabber 14 rebounds.
The Bearcats return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 14, at 8 p.m. when they play host to in Fifth Third Arena.
