CINCINNATI, Ohio -- University of Cincinnati first-year freshmen Mike Mickens and Corey Smith were named to the 2005 BIG EAST second team all-conference team.
Mickens, a 6-foot, 165-pound cornerback from Huber Heights, Ohio, led the BIG EAST and is second nationally in passes defended, averaging 1.5 per game. Mickens, who won a starting berth in the UC secondary during preseason drills after helping Wayne High to a pair of league titles, finished sixth on the team in tackles with 51.
Smith became a mainstay at outside linebacker during the preseason. The 6-1, 215-pound former All-South Jersey selection at Salem (N.J.) High was UC's leading tackler before injury curtailed his season after nine games, and finished third with 64 stops. He also had seven tackles for loss.
The BIG EAST All-Conference teams were determined by a vote of the league's head football coaches.
