The kicking game is one of the more experienced areas of the Bearcats, and that experience will be counted upon to lead to improved special teams play.
"We return almost our entire group of specialists," said Dantonio. "Kevin Lovell looks solid and should be a strength. Our special teams will represent our attitude as a team."
Chet Ervin showed improvement in 2004 when allowed to concentrate solely on punting. The senior punted for a 41.2-yard average and made improvements in his placement of the ball. Junior Brian Steel, who saw action in Ervin's absence last season, and redshirt freshmen Kevin Huber, will create a competitive environment at the position.
Kevin Lovell, who took over the kicking duties upon transferring from junior college, led the team in scoring with 72 points. The junior made 11 of his 15 field goal attempts and also handled the kickoffs.
Junior Patrick Farfsing is back to handle the long snapping duties for the third straight season. Mike Daniels, another junior, averaged 19.2 yards on kickoff returns and 11.8 yards as a punt returner.
