COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.--University of Cincinnati redshirt freshman Jessie Nevitt will take part in USA Volleyball's National Team Open Tryout this weekend (Jan. 13-15) at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The tryouts bring together the nation's best talent for the purpose of identifying top prospects for USA Volleyball. Players that have finished their collegiate eligibility will join the program in late-January, while current college players start at the end of their academic year.
"This is a great opportunity for Jessie and our program," stated Bearcat head coach Reed Sunahara. "Jessie will get to compete with many great players and see where she measures up. I am hopeful that she can come back and use this experience to her advantage."
"I am really excited about this opportunity, but at the same time, I don't know what to expect," Nevitt said. "Reed keeps telling me what a great experience this will be and I am just hoping to do well and improve as a player."
Nevitt enjoyed a lengthy list of awards in her first season of competition, including being tabbed the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year and earning a slot on the league's all-conference first team. She was also a first team all-region selection by the AVCA and an honorable mention All-American. During the season, Nevitt picked up the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week award five times, matching the league record for a single year.
Nevitt wrapped up the season leading the Bearcats in both hitting (.337) and blocks per game (1.38), ranking among the BIG EAST top-five in both categories. She was also third on the Bearcats in kills per game (3.11), while ranking second with 40 service aces.
