The University of Cincinnati men's and women's swimming and diving teams will open the 2006 portion of their schedule on Friday, Jan. 13, with a quadrangular meet involving local rivals Louisville and Miami (Ohio), as well as Division III power Kenyon. The meet will begin at 4 p.m. in 's .

PLENTY OF REST:

UC has had plenty of time off since last competing in the () Invitational on Dec. 2-4. The Bearcats took a two-week training trip to between Dec. 10 and 24. They had a break for the holidays and returned to the pool on Jan. 7 for the annual Intrasquad Pentathlon.

BEARCAT BITES:

• Senior Ann Degenstein is currently ranked in the top 14 in the country in both the 100 fly (14th) and the 200 fly (6th).

• Senior Steve Marshall, returning after missing the entire 2004-05 campaign, has been impressive thus far this season. The native has won three 200 breaststroke titles and captured one 100 breast title. He holds the school record in the 100 breaststroke (55.58).

LAST TIME OUT:

The Bearcat men and women finished ninth and seventh, respectively, at the 12th annual () Invitational on Dec. 4 at the . The Bearcats saw five swimmers post NCAA `B' qualifying times and three school records fell. Senior Ann Degenstein met NCAA `B' qualifying marks in both the 100 (54.38) and 200 butterfly (1:58.58), winning both events and setting meet records in each. She broke her own school record in the prelims of the 200 fly, besting her 1:58.87 school mark, set last season. Randi Vogel also set a school mark in finishing second in the 100 backstroke with a 56.70 in the finals. Her 56.39 in the prelims topped Tricia Staff's school record, set in 1992. She also finished second in the 200 back with a season-best 2:01.53. For the men, Steve Marshall set a school record and met an NCAA `B' qualifying time in winning the 100 breast. 's 55.58 in the prelims topped teammate David Gustavsson's one-year-old school mark. also captured the 200 breast title in 2:03.03, shaving over three seconds off his season-best time. Gustavsson finished third in the 100 breast with a 56.46 and placed second in the 100 fly (48.65), finishing just .01 behind 's Chris Sullivan. Gustavsson also won the 200 IM, posting a season-best 1:50.74.

BEARCATS TO OPEN KEATING NATATORIUM:

The UC swimming and diving teams will welcome the addition of the new Keating Natatorium in the heart of on the campus. The Bearcats have spent the last three years training at . The lack of diving facilities at St. Xavier have made it difficult for UC to field a competitive diving squad. Keating Natatorium will give the Bearcats an opportunity to host home meets and field an entire team. The natatorium is slated to open in February.
