The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving teams suffered a pair of defeats in their first BIG EAST dual meets. Against West Virginia on Friday, the men fell, 118-85, while the women were defeated, 118.5-80.5. On Saturday at Pittsburgh, the men lost, 170-63, and the women were outscored, 180-55.
The Bearcats picked up six event wins against the Mountaineers, three each from the men and women. David Gustavsson and Bjorn Mates finished one-two in the 200-yard freestyle in times of 1:42.74 and 1:44.18, then Mates won the 100-yard breaststroke in 51.81 seconds. Gustavsson was joined by Stephen Wood, Jeff Kaemmerlen and Ryan Yearwood on the winning 200-yard freestyle team, finishing in 1:26.12.
Karen Brasier earned the first win for the women, taking first in the 100-yard butterfly in 57.60 seconds. Randi Vogel then finished first in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:05.57. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Lindsey Smith, Tammy Smith, Paola Rivas and Elyse Perez won the event in 1:48.11.
At Pitt, the lone win for the women was in the 200-yard butterfly, where Ann Degenstein and Karen Brasier were the top two finishers in times of 2:03.62 and 2:07.28.
For the men, Gustavsson got the win in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:51.04 and Marcel Kleiner took home first in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:41.93. UC also earned a win with the 400-yard freestyle medley team of Yearwood, Gustavsson, Mates and Kleiner in a time of 3:03.37.
