CINCINNATI, Ohio---Mark Muscenti, a senior member of the University of Cincinnati baseball team, was honored during halftime of the Feb. 6 UC-Louisville men's basketball game when he was bestowed the Jean Stephens Award.
The award is named in honor of Stephens, one of the Department of Athletics most dedicated employees who passed away suddenly six years ago. Following Stephens' untimely passing, an award was created to honor the top senior student-athlete for his or her integrity, high ethical standards, respect for all persons and commitment to UC Athletics and the university, qualities Stephens exemplified. The recipient of the award is selected by a committee comprised of faculty, athletic department staff and student representatives. A plaque commemorating the winners is located in Fifth Third Arena.
Muscenti, a native of Chagrin Falls, Ohio and a graduate of Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin High School, is about to enter his fourth year as the Bearcats' starting second baseman. Last year, Muscenti hit a career-high .289, registering a personal-best 13 doubles, two home runs and 28 RBI.
UC opens the 2006 season on Friday (Feb. 10), travelling to top-ranked Florida.
