SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Treasure Humphries scored 21 points and Bellva May, playing in front of several family members and members of her former high school team, added 16 points off the bench to lead the University of Cincinnati to a 77-58 win against Seton Hall Wednesday night in women's basketball action in Walsh Gymnasium.
The pair of guards accounted for 37 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Humphries was 6-of-11 from the field, including 2-for-2 from three-point range and hit 7-of-9 from the free-throw line while adding three rebounds, four assists and two steals. May, a product of Orange High School, just outside the Seton Hall campus, shot 6-of-8 from the field and added five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
"Those two (Humpries and May) really fed off each other's energy tonight," head coach Laurie Pirtle said. "We got a lot of help from the sixth man tonight with all of Bellva's friends and family in the stands. That really gave us some energy."
Reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Week Shelly Bellman chipped in 12 points and three rebounds, as UC shot .483 (28-58) for the game, including .500 (6-12) from behind the three-point line.
UC jumped out to an 11-6 lead on May's first basket, a three, at the 14:52 mark. The Pirates evened the score at 13 on a three-point play by Monique Blake at 13:37, who led Seton Hall with 18 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Seton Hall led by as much as six in the first half after a Brittney Messina layup put SHU up 28-22 with just under six minutes left.
The Bearcats used a 13-2 run over the final 5:20 to head into halftime with a 35-30 lead.
A Bellman layup and Humphries jumper helped stretch the UC lead to 39-31 with 18:24 to play. Seton Hall used a 13-5 run, highlighted by eight points from Heta Korpivaara, to pull even at 44-44 with 13:43 left.
UC quickly stretched the lead back to eight, 53-45, on a Karen Twehues three with 11:31 left. Seton Hall answered with a Keri Shutz three to cut the deficit to 53-48.
The Bearcats took over the game over the next few minutes. After Bellman, Humphries and Michelle Jones hit baskets, Blake answered and the Bearcats led, 59-50, with just under nine minutes to play.
On the ensuing possession, with the shot clock winding down, Bellman hit a long three, to give UC its largest lead, 62-50.
With Seton Hall playing catch up, the Bearcats knocked down 9-of-12 free throws down the stretch, including 5-of-7 from Humphries, to put the game on ice.
The Bearcats are next in action on Saturday, Feb. 4, as they entertain Pittsburgh at 2:30 p.m. in Fifth Third Arena. The game will be televised locally by FOX-19.
