GAINESVILLE, Fla.---Florida pounded out 15 hits at the plate and the Gator defense turned four double plays, pacing the nation's top-ranked team to a 10-0 win over Cincinnati in college baseball action on Friday night. The season-opener for both teams was played in front of an overflow crowd of 4,488.
Shortstop Adam Davis led the Gator (1-0) attack with three hits and three RBI, including a two-run single in a four-run second inning. Five other Florida players ended the game with two hits.
The Bearcats were limited to five singles, all coming in the five innings starter Bryan Ball spent on the mound. The UF senior walked three and struck out three to pick up the win for Florida. Josh Edmondson also worked three shutout innings out of the bullpen for the Gators.
UC freshman Steve Blevins had an impressive start to his first career outing, striking out the side in the first. The second inning was tougher for Blevins as 10 Gator batters came to the plate as part of a four-run inning. Brandon McArthur got the scoring started with an RBI groundout, with Davis' two-run single later extending the lead to 3-0. All-American Matt LaPorta followed Davis with an RBI single of his own to make it 4-0.
Florida scored two runs in each of the next two innings to spell the end of the night for Blevins. In the third Chris Woods and Davis each had RBI singles, while McArthur led the next frame off with a homer to left. Woods added his second RBI single of the day in the fourth to make it 8-0.
Meanwhile, the Bearcats had chances in each of the first four innings, but three double plays induced by Ball ended each of the threats.
Following Blevins, UC turned to Nick Buscemi and the junior was impressive in three innings of work. Buscemi allowed only an RBI single to Brian Leclerc in the three frames. Florida got its last run of the night in the eighth when pinch-hitter Cody Neer lined a single to left off of Adam Calez that plated Gavin Dickey.
UC, now 0-1 on the year will look for its first win of the season again tomorrow, once again matching up with the Gators. Junior Kyle Rapp gets the start on the mound for the Bearcats, taking on Florida sophomore Bryan Augenstein.
