-- The University of Cincinnati men's and women's swimming and diving teams each sit in seventh place after day two of competition at the 2006 BIG EAST Championships at the Nassau Country Aquatic Center. Notre Dame leads the way on the men's side, while is the women's leader.
Three Bearcats posted NCAA `B' qualifying times in three events with Gerdien de Jong (Bussum, Netherlands/Goois Lyceum), Ann Degenstein (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands), and Marcel Kleiner (Heilbronn, Germany/Hohen Staufen Gymnasium) each finishing in the top five.
In the men's 50 freestyle prelims Thursday morning, Kleiner swam a 20.12 and followed that up with a 20.27 to finish third in the finals. Also on the men's side, David Gustavsson (, /Ebersteinska) placed fifth in the 200 IM in 1:50.38 and Ryan Yearwood (, Trinidad/Queen's ) finished ninth in the 50 free (20.65). The 200 freestyle relay team of Kleiner, Yearwood, Gustavsson and Steve Marshall (/Walsh Jesuit) placed third in 1:21.31.
For the women, de Jong and Degenstein led the way, finishing fourth in their respective events. In the 50 freestyle prelims, de Jong posted a 23.40 and followed with a 23.49 in the finals. Degenstein was a `B' qualifier in the 500 freestyle, touching the wall in 4:49.35 in the finals.
Day three of competition will get underway Friday morning at 10:30 a.m.
