PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- University of Cincinnati guard Shelly Bellman was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Monday for the week ending February 19. It is the second time she has won the award in the past four weeks.
Bellman averaged 10.5 points and 10.0 rebounds in Cincinnati's wins over West Virginia and Louisville last week. In the 56-46 win over the Mountaineers, the Ottawa, Ohio native grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds, the most by a Bearcat this season, and added six points and two steals. When UC defeated Louisville, 76-65, the rookie guard scored 15 points with six rebounds and was 2-of-3 from three-point range.
This is the third Freshman of the Week award for the Bearcats. They are the only team to have two different winners of the award, as Michelle Jones earned it on Dec. 19.
The Bearcats, who have won two-straight to climb to 16-8 overall and 6-7 in the BIG EAST, travel to face Georgetown on Tuesday before hosting Notre Dame on Saturday, February 25 at 2 p.m. in the final home game of the season. That game will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Television Network.
