WASHINGTON, D.C. - Karen Twehues scored 19 points, two off her career high to lead the University of Cincinnati to a 63-47 win against Georgetown on Tuesday night in women's basketball action at McDonough Gymnasium.
Anne Stephens scored 12 points and Emy Ogide added a career-high nine as the Bearcats (17-8, 7-7) clinched a spot in the 2006 BIG EAST Women's Basketball Tournament. UC outrebounded the Hoyas, 42-28, on the night and used a 20-13 edge on the offensive glass to put up 25 second-chance points.
"We are really excited to be a part of (the BIG EAST Tournament) in our first year in such a great league," head coach Laurie Pirtle said. "It is so hard to get wins in this league. Every team is very good; it's a battle every night. There are great players on every team."
The Hoyas were led by Kieraah Marlow, who had 11 points and eight rebounds. Katrina Wheeler and Bethany LeSueur added 10 points apiece.
The 47 points by Georgetown was the fourth-lowest for a UC opponent this season and marked the second time in less than a week that the Bearcats held a team to under 50.
The Hoyas jumped out to an 11-7 lead just over four minutes into the game, but a pair of Treasure Humpries free throws, a Twehues three, and a layup by Stephens gave the Bearcats a 14-11 lead at the 12:39 mark.
The teams exchanged baskets until Stephens opened a 9-0 Bearcat run with a pair of free throws. Twehues hit her third triple of the half to give UC its largest lead at 26-14.
UC's lead was 10 after an Emy Ogide layup made the score 32-22 at the 3:44 mark, but that was the last score of the period for the Bearcats.
The Hoyas scored just twice in the last four minutes, but were able to cut the lead to 32-26 going into halftime.
Karen Twehues led the Bearcats with nine points after hitting 3-of-5 three-point attempts.
Kieraah Marlow led Georgetown with nine points in the stanza.
The Bearcats grabbed 13 offensive rebounds in the first half, allowing UC to outscore Gerogetown, 15-3, in second-chance points. Cincinnati also got 17 points from its bench.
UC extended its lead to 13 at 42-29 on a Jill Stephens layup at the 15:20 mark in the second half. GU cut the lead to nine, 46-37, on a layup by Wheeler, but a 15-2 UC run over the next eight minutes put the game out of reach.
Humphries led UC with seven rebounds, while Ogide added six. Marlow topped the Georgetown rebounding effort with eight while Wheeler had four of GU's 10 blocked shots.
The Bearcats are next in action on Saturday, Feb. 25, when they host Notre Dame on Senior Day at 2 p.m. in Fifth Third Arena.
