SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati women's golf team will play in its second of seven tournaments this spring when it takes part in the Big River Telephone Classic, hosted by Murray State on March 6-7. The two-day, 36-hole tournament will be contested at the Miller Golf Course in Murray, Ky.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: The 2006 Big River Telephone Classic will begin at 8 a.m. on Monday, March 6 at the Miller Golf Course in Murray Ky. Hosted by Murray State, the tournament will feature 10 squads vying to unseat the host defending champion Racers as the tournament medalists. MSU won last year's edition by 44 strokes over Rend Lake Community College. Joining the Bearcats and Racers in the tournament field are Butler, Central Arkansas, Chicago State, Dayton, Eastern Kentucky, Tennessee Tech and Western Kentucky.
LAST TIME OUT: Marianne Erb posted her second top-10 finish of the year, concluding the UCF Invitational tied for seventh place to lead the Bearcats in their spring-opening event.
Erb, a freshman, followed up her career-best round of 73 in the opener with a 76 in the second round to finish at 149. Sophomore Hillery Wilson was second in the UC rundown, carding a 78, identical to her opening round score, to tie for 28th place overall. Susan Narn of Florida International shot back-to-back rounds of 71 to win the tournament by two strokes over Heather Hargemann of Florida Gulf Coast.
The team standings showed UC slipping into a tie for 10th in the final scores, after a final round total of 322. The Bearcats finished the tournament at 633, tied with Florida Gulf Coast. Rollins won the team title with a 595, three shots better than Florida International.
WHERE SHE LEFT OFF: Hillery Wilson closed the first half of the 2005-06 season playing the best golf of her collegiate career as the sophomore won three of the final four tournaments of the fall schedule. Wilson was at her best at the Dayton Fall Invitational on Oct. 31, 2005 as her round of 69 was the lowest ever recorded by a UC golfer, breaking Shelley Jonda's mark by two strokes. Wilson, a member of the Conference USA All-Freshman Team last season, also captured medalist honors at the Krump Kup and the Cincinnati Fall Classic to give her four tournament wins for her career. She added a second place finish at the Unlimited Potential/Bay Tree Classic. Wilson leads the Bearcats with a 75.1 average and is shooting 77.1 for her career.
