, -- The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team held its annual awards banquet on Sunday, March 5, at the Vernon Manor hotel in . The athletes, coaches, and their families gathered together to honor the 2005 season, their first in BIG EAST Conference play. The Bearcats ended the season with 3-11-4 overall record and went 1-8-2 in the BIG EAST.
Senior goalkeeper Sherry Slye was named the Most Valuable Player for the 2005 season. Slye recorded four shutouts and had 94 saves for the Bearcats, starting every game in the net and playing each of the 1,713 minutes for UC. Slye closed her career as a Bearcat with 212 saves.
The annual Coaches Award was given to junior forward Heather Haney. A transfer from , Haney tallied two goals on the season. She was honored by the BIG EAST on Oct. 17 after scoring a goal apiece against No. 14 Marquette (Oct. 14) and (Oct. 16).
The Rookie of the Year award was handed out to freshman Kim Sykes. Sykes, a defender, started all 18 matches for the Bearcats, playing in 1,707 of a possible 1,713 minutes. An All-Ohio selection in 2005, Sykes scored her only goal of the season, a game-winner, against on Aug. 28.
As well as honoring this past season, the team also looked ahead as the captains for the 2006 season were named. The honor went to four Bearcats. Seniors-to-be Ashley Roush and Becky Imhoff, along with junior-to be Rachael Epps and sophomore-to-be Sykes, were chosen to lead the team. It will be the second straight year that Imhoff will captain the squad.
Seniors Lauren Buland, Jamie Clark, captain Jen Leiter, Slye, and captain Marie Strelka were honored for their hard work and dedication over the years. Buland is currently applying to physical therapy schools, while Clark is on co-op in . Leiter graduated early and has been accepted to numerous law schools, Slye is finishing her degree at UC and Strelka has one year left in graduate school at .
The Bearcats will continue their spring season on April 2nd as they travel to , to take on and .
