SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati men's golf team opens the second half of the season at the Butler Spring Invitational on March 21-22. The tournament is the first of five this spring for the Bearcats, culminating with their first-ever appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: The Butler Spring Invitational will consist of 36 holes, played over two days at the Broadmoor Country Club in Indianapolis, Ind. Play will get underway each day at 8:30 a.m. Among the teams in the tournament field are the host Bulldogs, Chicago State, Cincinnati, IPFW, IUPUI, Oakland and Wisconsin-Green Bay. The full field for the event was not immediately available. Oakland won last year's version of the event by a commanding 17 strokes over Detroit Mercy.
LAST TIME OUT: The Bearcats shot their lowest round of the tournament, carding a final round 292 to move to 10th in the final rundown at the BIG EAST/MAC Challenge which concluded on Nov. 6, 2005 at the Orange National Golf Course.
Four of the five Cincinnati players matched or lowered their best round of the tourney, including freshman Albert Fernandez who carded a career-low score of 71. The round moved Fernandez to 44th overall.
Leading the Bearcats was junior Joe Young who maintained his day one position, finishing tied for 27th after a final round 74. Senior Adam Fluty also enjoyed a fine performance in the finale, shooting a 73.
In the team standings, the Bearcats finished at 898, just four shots behind ninth-place DePaul.
MAKING IMPROVEMENTS: The Bearcats wrapped up the fall portion of the schedule posting top-five finishes in three of the last four tournaments of the first half of the season. UC pulled the feat after recording just two top-fives and only a single top-two finish last year. UC started the run with a second place finish at the Krump Kup, before finishing third at the 2005 Tillinghast. Most recently, the Bearcats were second in the Dayton Invitational.
CAN'T WAIT TO GET HOME: The Bearcats will play host to a tournament this spring, joining Dayton as the hosts for the second annual UC/UD Men's Invitational. Originally scheduled to be played one day in Cincinnati and one day in Dayton, the tournament will now take place at Hueston Woods in Oxford, Ohio.
