SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati women's golf team will begin a busy week in the state of Florida on Monday (March 20), when it begins play in the Lady Herd/El Diablo Intercollegiate, hosted by Marshall University. The Bearcats are coming off a team title at the Big River Telephone Classic on March 6-7, that saw sophomore Hillery Wilson take the individual crown for the fourth time this year. The El Diablo is one of two tournaments scheduled for UC next week, which will also host the Cincinnati Spring Invitational, March 24-25.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: A total of 14 teams will converge on the El Diablo Golf and Country Club for the fourth annual Lady Herd/El Diablo Intercollegiate. The 54-hole, two-day tournament will begin with shotgun starts at 7:30 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday (March 20-21). Day one will see 36 holes played, with the final 18 scheduled for Tuesday. The field includes Boston College, Cincinnati, Eastern Kentucky, Florida Atlantic, Hartford, Marshall, Maryland, Missouri State, Murray State, North Texas, Western Carolina, Wichita State, Xavier and Youngstown State. Coastal Carolina is the defending champion of the event, while UC finished tied for seventh last year.
LAST TIME OUT: With three players placing in the top-10, including tournament medalist Hillery Wilson, the Bearcats earned first place in the Big River Telephone Classic. UC held off a furious final round charge by both Eastern Kentucky and Murray State to win the event by two strokes.
Wilson, holding a two-shot lead over teammate Allison Mayborg after 18 holes, fired a final round of 80 to earn medalist honors for the fourth time this year and fifth time in her career with a total of 158. Mayborg shot a final round 79 to end the tournament tied for second.
As a team, Cincinnati shot a 325 in the final round, just one stroke higher than its opening round total.
WHERE SHE LEFT OFF: Hillery Wilson has enjoyed one of the best seasons ever by a UC women's golfer, having won four of her last five tournaments. The sophomore was at her best at the Dayton Fall Invitational on Oct. 31, 2005 as her round of 69 was the lowest ever recorded by a UC golfer, breaking Shelley Jonda's mark by two strokes. Wilson, a member of the Conference USA All-Freshman Team last season, has also captured medalist honors at the Krump Kup, the Cincinnati Fall Classic and most recently the Big River Telephone Classic to give her five tournament wins for her career. Wilson leads the Bearcats with a 75.6 average and is shooting 77.2 for her career. Her play has also helped UC to team victories at the Krump Kup, the Dayton Fall Invitational and the Big River Telephone Classic.
