SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati women's golf team will host its third and final tournament of the year, serving as co-hosts of the UC/UD Invitational, beginning on Monday, April 3. The tournament, held in conjunction with the University of Dayton, will be played at Hueston Woods Golf Course near Oxford, Ohio.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: The second annual UC/UD Women's Collegiate Invitational will be comprised of 36 holes played over two days at the Hueston Woods Golf Course near Oxford, Ohio. The tournament is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, April 3-4 with a 9 a.m. start on tap for each day. The Bearcats will field two teams in the tournament and will be joined in the event by single squads from Butler, Dayton, Detroit, IPFW, Robert Morris and Toronto. Northern Kentucky was the team winner of the inaugural event by three strokes over the Bearcats. Three UC players earned top-five finishes at the event, led by Allison Couch and Hillery Wilson tying for second place.
LAST TIME OUT: Hillery Wilson fired a final round 79 to capture second place at the UC Spring Invitational. Wilson's play led the Bearcats to a second place finish in the team standings. After shooting a 78 in the opening round and standing tied for fourth, Wilson went one stroke higher but still managed to move up two positions in the final order.
As a team, Cincinnati trimmed 10 strokes off of its day one total, shooting a 319 and moving past both UAB and Wichita State for second in the team standings. Illinois fired a final round 311 to win by 24 shots.
Freshman Chelsa Dooley also moved into the top-10, shooting a 77 on Saturday to finish at 160, good for a tie for ninth. Junior Sarah Bires also enjoyed a strong round, finishing at 80 to move to 17th in the final rundown.
WHERE SHE LEFT OFF: Hillery Wilson has enjoyed one of the best seasons ever by a UC women's golfer, having won four of her last six tournaments, while adding one runner-up finish during the span. The sophomore was at her best at the Dayton Fall Invitational on Oct. 31, 2005 as her round of 69 was the lowest ever recorded by a UC golfer, breaking Shelley Jonda's mark by two strokes. Wilson, a member of the Conference USA All-Freshman Team last season, has also captured medalist honors at the Krump Kup, the Cincinnati Fall Classic and, most recently, the Big River Telephone Classic to give her five tournament wins for her career. Wilson leads the Bearcats with a 76.6 average and is shooting 77.5 for her career. Her play has also helped UC to team victories at the Krump Kup, the Dayton Fall Invitational and the Big River Telephone Classic.
