MURRAY, Ky.---With three players placing in the top-10, including tournament medalist Hillery Wilson, the University of Cincinnati women's golf team earned first place in the Big River Telephone Classic, which concluded on Tuesday at the Miller Golf Course in Murray, Ky. UC held off a furious final round charge by both Eastern Kentucky and Murray State to win the event by two strokes.
Wilson, holding a two-shot lead over teammate Allison Mayborg after 18 holes, fired a round of 80 on Tuesday to earn medalist honors for the fourth time this year and fifth time in her career with a total of 158. Mayborg shot a final round 79 to end the tournament tied for second with Julie Bennett of Murray State, just one stroke back of Wilson.
Freshman Marianne Erb made the biggest improvement for the Bearcats as she shot a round of 77 in the finale to jump to ninth in the final rundown. Erb finished at 164, after entering the day tied for 26th.
As a team, Cincinnati shot a 325 in the final round, just one stroke higher than its opening round total. Armed with a seven-stroke lead entering the final round, the Bearcats saw Eastern Kentucky shoot a 320 and Murray State a tournament-best 317 to end two and 10 shots back, respectively. Murray State knocked 24 shots off its first round total and jumped from sixth to third in the final team rundown.
The tournament crown marks the third for UC this year after also winning the Krump Kup and the Dayton Fall Invitational. The Big River Telephone Classic crown was the first two-round title won by UC this year.
UC starts a busy stretch on March 21-22 when it plays in the Lady Herd/El Diablo Intercollegiate in Citrus Springs, Fla. Just three days later, the Bearcats will host the Cincinnati Spring Invitational at the Plantation Inn Golf Course in Crystal River, Fla.
