CINCINNATI, Ohio--University of Cincinnati swimmer David Gustavsson (Aby, Sweden/Ebersteinska) and tennis player Andrea Phillips (Castro Valley, Calif./Castro Valley) have been named the athletic department's top scholar-athletes of the winter quarter after both athletes earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
A total of 17 student-athletes, representing each of UC's sports, were named scholar-athletes of the quarter and the contingent will have their photos added to the Academic Wall of Fame in Fifth Third Arena. In addition to Gustavsson and Phillips, baseball player Evan Sanford (Aurora, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit), cross country runners Randy King (North Bend, Ohio/St. Xavier) and Rick King (North Bend, Ohio/St. Xavier), men's golfer Kyle Pinger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin), women's golfers Sarah Bires (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) Sarah Ryan (Harrison, Ohio/William Harrison) and Sarah Stamper (Covington, Ky./Villa Madonna Academy), women's soccer's Kim Sykes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore), swimmer Marcel Kleiner (Heilbronn, Germany/Hohen Staufen Gymnasium) and track athlete Abi Hamrick (Perrysburg, Ohio/Cumberland College) all earned 4.0 GPA's during the winter.
A total of 204 student-athletes from UC's 17 sports were named to either the Bearcat or the Topcat Honor Roll. To qualify for the Bearcat Honor Roll, a student-athlete must have earned a grade point average between 3.0 and 3.49 for the quarter, while Topcat honorees must maintain between a 3.5 and a 4.0 GPA.
