MADISON, Ill.---Behind a round of 75 from freshman Albert Fernandez, the University of Cincinnati men's golf team climbed to eighth in the final team standings at the Billiken Invitational, which concluded on Tuesday at Gateway National Links. The tournament is UC's final before its first-ever BIG EAST Championship, April 23-25.
Fernandez carded the lowest UC round of the day, climbing to a tie for 50th overall with a score of 232. Joe Young overtook Geoff Newman for team-low honors, shooting a final round 78 to end tied for 19th at 226. Newman, who shot rounds of 74 and 73 on Monday, faded to an 80 on Tuesday, to finish tied for 22nd, just one shot back of Young.
The story of the day came from the Western Illinois team, which overcame an eight-shot deficit to take the team title by one shot over Saint Louis. Austin Peay, the leader through 36 holes, saw its team shoot a 317 in the final round to end tied for fourth and 19 shots off the lead. UC shared eighth spot with North Dakota State after each team finished with a score of 912.
The 2006 BIG EAST Championship is slated for April 23-25 at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Lake Jovita, Fla. The site is a familiar one to the Bearcats as it hosted two of the last three Conference USA Tournaments.
