SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati rowing team will head to Oak Ridge, Tenn. for the two-day Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta. The regatta begins Friday, April 14. Cincinnati will compete in five of the 22 races scheduled for the weekend. The competition on Melton Hill Lake will include BIG EAST opponents, Louisville and West Virginia, as well as some of the country's top teams in Tennessee and Washington.
LAST OUTING: Cincinnati showed some major improvement on Saturday, April 1 in the four-team regatta against Indiana, Eastern Michigan, and Dayton. The Bearcats finished second in four of five races, including some close performances in the second varsity 8 and second varsity 4 races. The Bearcats finished just seconds out of first place, falling to Eastern Michigan in each race. The first varsity 8 boat, despite finishing last, improved its time by 40 seconds over its previous competition in Texas.
THE COMPETITION: Cincinnati and Louisville last met at the Head of the Elk Regatta in October. Louisville earned a win in the open 8 "A" race that weekend, but Cincinnati topped the Cardinals in two other open 8 races. The Bearcats will face Louisville in each of UC's five races in Tennessee this weekend.
The University of Washington, ranked 13th according to the CRCA poll (April 12), had a successful outing last weekend at the Washington Quad Regatta. UW earned victories in the JV 8, varsity 4, third varsity 8, and second novice 4races against the tough Oregon State and Washington State teams. Cincinnati will face Washington in the JV 8 race this weekend.
The 17th-ranked University of Tennessee squad fell to Ohio State and Michigan in its last competition, despite its varsity 4 boat earning a win. Cincinnati will face UT's frosh/novice 8 squad at the regatta in Oak Ridge this weekend.
UP NEXT: The Bearcats will head to Lewistown, Pa. on Saturday, April 22 to face Bucknell and BIG EAST rival West Virginia.
