CINCINNATI, Ohio -- New head coach Mick Cronin has signed his first two recruits to the University of Cincinnati men's basketball team. Marvin Gentry, a 6-3 guard at McLennan Community College, and John Williamson, a 6-6 forward at Cincinnati State and Technical College, have signed national letters-of-intent to continue their basketball and academic careers as Bearcats.
Gentry, originally from Ft. Worth, Texas, averaged 15.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists while earning North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference Player of the Year honors this past season.
Williamson, a Columbus, Ohio native, was named to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II All-American team after averaging 27.4 points and 11.7 rebounds in 2005-06.
"Both of these young men are great additions to our program, both for their talent and athletic ability as well as their character," stated Cronin.
"Marvin has a great personality and is a guy our fans are going to love. He is an all-around good player who has a great mid-range game and the ability to put the ball on the floor and make plays," Cronin continued. "What excites me the most is his defense. He has long arms and great anticipation."
"John is a great young man. As a player, he is strong and explosive and is an excellent finisher," Cronin noted. "He can score in a number of ways. Obviously, we need him to be able to help us right away. I think that will be a smooth transition for him because of the great coaches at Cincinnati State who taught him how to work hard and play hard."
Andre Tate, the Cincinnati State head coach, and assistant Erik Martin were Bearcat stars in the early 1990s.
Williamson is rated as the No. 10 junior college prospect nationally by JUCOJunction.com, while Gentry is rated No. 49.
