SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati women's golf team will tune-up one final time for its initial BIG EAST Championship when the Bearcats compete in the 16-team Illini Spring Classic this weekend (April 14-15). The Bearcats have enjoyed a strong spring season, finishing in the top-two of three of their last four tournaments. The 36-hole Illini Spring Classic will be played at the Stone Creek Golf Club in Urbana, Ill.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: A total of 16 teams will converge on the Stone Creek Golf Club in Urbana, Ill. for the 2006 edition of the Illini Spring Classic. The tournament will consist of 36 holes, spread over two days with action teeing off on Friday, April 14 at 8:30 a.m. CT. The last round will also get underway at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. Illinois is the defending champion of the event, having taken a 12-shot win over Ferris State last year. Joining the Bearcats and Illini in the field will be Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Illinois, Grand Valley State, Illinois Wesleyan, Indiana, Indianapolis, Iowa, Michigan, Northern Illinois, Oregon, Southern Indiana, Truman State and Western Michigan. Cincinnati last played in the tournament in 2002, finishing 10th after capturing the team title in 1999.
LAST TIME OUT: Hillery Wilson's round two comeback came up one shot short as the sophomore finished second at the UC/UD Invitational. Wilson overcame a five-shot deficit after one round of play, finishing just one stroke back of Butler's Lynnsey Showers in the battle for medalist honors. After carding a round of 80 in the frigid opening round, Wilson bounced back to fire a 75 and end the tournament at 155. Junior Mya Pronschinske also enjoyed a strong performance, shooting a final round 80 to secure her first top-five finish of the year in fifth place. In the team standings, the Bearcats finished second behind Butler.
ENJOYING A GREAT YEAR: Hillery Wilson has enjoyed one of the best seasons ever by a UC women's golfer, having won four of her last seven tournaments, while adding a pair of runner-up finishes during the span. The sophomore was at her best at the Dayton Fall Invitational on Oct. 31, 2005 as her round of 69 was the lowest ever recorded by a UC golfer, breaking Shelley Jonda's mark by two strokes. Wilson, a member of the Conference USA All-Freshman Team last season, has also captured medalist honors at the Krump Kup, the Cincinnati Fall Classic and, most recently, the Big River Telephone Classic to give her five tournament wins for her career. Wilson leads the Bearcats with a 76.7 average and is shooting 77.5 for her career. Her play has also helped UC to team victories at the Krump Kup, the Dayton Fall Invitational and the Big River Telephone Classic.
