SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati rowing team will travel to Bucknell on Saturday, April 22 for a match-up with the Bisons and BIG EAST rival West Virginia. Bucknell will host the regatta on the Susquehanna River at Shamokin Dam, Pa. The event is scheduled for a 9 a.m. start.
LAST OUTING: The Bearcats had a very successful outing at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships (SIRA) last weekend. All five of the team's boats finished in the top-11 overall. The freshman/novice 8 placed fourth with a time of 7:31.5, earning the Bearcats' best finish. The junior varsity eight earned a fifth-place finish in 7:17.2.
THE COMPETITION: Bucknell earned two race victories in the second varsity 8 and the varsity 4 last weekend in its regatta against Delaware, Temple, and George Mason. The varsity 4 race proved to be the most successful for Bucknell, as they finished in first and second ahead of third-place George Mason.
West Virginia and Bucknell last saw each other at the Murphy Cup in Philadelphia, Pa. on March 27. The Bucknell varsity 8 boat won over WVU by more than 10 seconds in a preliminary race. Bucknell finished third overall in the varsity 8 final in a time of 7:04.78.
WVU spent last weekend in Oak Ridge, Tenn. at the SIRA Championships with UC. WVU (7:15.7) got the better of the Bearcats (7:16.9) in the varsity 8 race, beating them out of fourth place in their heat by a single second. Cincinnati evened the record in the varsity 4 B-final, finishing more than 10 seconds ahead of the WVU boat.
UP NEXT: The Bearcats will travel to Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. to compete in their first BIG EAST Championships. The regatta is scheduled for Sunday, April 30.
