SETTING THE SCENE: The 12 men's golf playing BIG EAST schools will converge on the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Lake Jovita, Fla., beginning on Monday, April 24 for the 2006 BIG EAST Championship. The 54-hole, two-day event will get underway at 7:30 a.m. each day, with the first 36 holes set for Monday. South Florida will serves as host school for this year's tournament.

ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: The field for the 2006 BIG EAST Championship was seeded prior to the event by a committee of BIG EAST coaches and conference administrators. Louisville earned the top-seed in its first year in the league, while the Bearcats were slotted 11th of 12 teams. Other teams in the field by seed include Notre Dame, Marquette, USF, St. John's, Villanova, Georgetown, DePaul, Rutgers, Connecticut and Seton Hall. A total of 54 holes will be played over two days to determine the team and individual champions. The top-seven finishers in the event will make up the 2006 BIG EAST All-Conference Team.

The course should be a familiar one to the Bearcats as Lake Jovita hosted two of the last three Conference USA Tournaments.

LAST TIME OUT: Behind a round of 75 from freshman Albert Fernandez, the Bearcats climbed to eighth in the final team standings at the Billiken Invitational. Fernandez carded the lowest UC round of the day, climbing to a tie for 50th overall with a score of 232. Joe Young overtook Geoff Newman for team-low honors, shooting a final round 78 to end tied for 19th at 226. Newman, who opened with rounds of 74 and 73, faded to an 80 in the finale, to finish tied for 22nd, just one shot back of Young. UC shared eighth spot with North Dakota State after each team finished with a score of 912.

ANOTHER WINNER: Joe Young has been hot lately, posting UC's best finish in three of the team's last four tournaments. The junior enjoyed a career day at the Butler Spring Invitational on March 20, as he not only shot a career-best 70, but he also picked up his first individual title. Young becomes the second first-time winner on the Bearcat roster this season, joining classmate Geoff Newman. Newman fired a career-low 69 to share medalist honors at the Krump Kup on Oct. 6, 2005. Newman was nearly victorious again at the UC/UD Invitational, falling in a play-off hole to finish second overall.
