CINCINNATI, Ohio-An assist from goalkeeper-turned forward, Mike Vessells, aided in UC's defeat of 2-1 over today in the Blue Chip Showcase held at the Xavier University Soccer Complex.
Playing with only one substitute, the Bearcats opened the first half dominating the Purple Aces of Evansville. UC was first to get on the scoreboard at the 11:01 mark when Kenny Anaba found the back of the Ace's net. Omar Cummings sprung Dominic Oppong down the right side of the field who then played a through ball to a running Anaba. Anaba made a move inside the box to defer 's keeper, which resulted in an open net for which he capitalized.
Fatigue became evident in the second half of the match as became more of a challenge to UC's defense. The Bearcats used all their resources as John-Michael Boggs, replaced Vessells in the net at the beginning of the half. Vessells then made his appearance on the field which proved to be productive as he assisted Omar Cummings who tallied the second goal of the game, giving UC a 2-0 lead.
With only a little over four minutes remaining in the match, the Ace's scored a controversial goal to create the final margin of 2-1. scored off of a cross from a passing movement up the right sideline. The Ace's cross found the feet of an open forward who shot a low ball which was caught by UC's Boggs. The referee ruled the ball over the goal line, which was disputed by both Boggs and the Bearcat defense, but stood as called giving their first and only goal.
The match ended in tense circumstances as a foul was called on UC with five seconds remaining on the clock. The Bearcat defensive wall stood strong as the Aces shot five yards outside of the box and again off the rebound as the shot was blocked by a UC player. was unable to break through the defense, giving UC the 2-1 win.
"This game showed the tremendous commitment our players have," commented head coach Hylton Dayes. "We definitely have improved throughout the spring and it has been productive as we begin to look to the fall season."
The Bearcats will officially close out the spring season as they welcome back UC Alumni, hosting the Annual Alumni Match next Saturday, April 29th at Gettler Stadium. Kick off is set for 2 p.m.
