CINCINNATI, Ohio-The Bearcats went 1-0-1 today at Gettler Stadium where they hosted the annual Bearcat Classic. The event featured , , and Miami of Ohio. UC played first as they match-up against the Northwestern Wildcats, earning a 2-0 win. The second match of the day saw take on who played to a 0-0 draw. The Wildcats of Northwestern earned a 1-0 win when they played in the third match of the day against the . The Bearcats were back in action as they played the fourth and final game of the Bearcat Classic, taking on Miami of Ohio playing to a 0-0 draw.
The Bearcats came out strong against Northwestern, scoring just 4 minutes into the match. The Bearcats were awarded a corner kick, taken by Kristin May, who sent a high ball to the right corner of the field which was gathered by Chelsea Kindschuh. Kindschuh then crossed a deep ball into the Wildcat's box as Becky Imhoff made a back post run, knocking the ball into the back left corner of the net, giving UC a 1-0 lead. Northwestern soon tried to retaliate, but was unsuccessful in breaking the Bearcat defense.
The second half of play was more evenly matched as both teams created many scoring opportunities. Neither team was able to capitalize until the final minutes of the match as Kristin May sealed the win for the Bearcats. The final margin of 2-0 was produced as defender Ashley Roush hit a long pass up the right side of the field onto May's foot, who one touched a low, hard shot passed the Wildcats' goalkeeper, securing UC's win.
In the second match of the Bearcat Classic, the Flyers of Dayton squared off against the Miami Redhawks, playing to a 0-0 draw. The Flyers were dominate with their aggressive play, but failed to find the back of the net despite many scoring opportunities. out shot 12-10.
After an hour intermission, the Bearcat Classic resumed with a match-up between Northwestern and . The Flyers played a much more physical game against the Wildcats but fatigue became a factor in the second half for both teams. It wasn't until late in the second half when Northwestern got a burst of energy and a Wildcat header found the back of the Flyer net to give Northwestern the 1-0 win.
UC was back in action to close out the Bearcat Classic when they played Miami of Ohio to a frustrating 0-0 draw. The Bearcats out shot the Redhawks 24-3 with a rotating line-up, which gave UC fresh legs on the front line. UC dominated Redhawk turf both halves of the game, but were unable to penetrate 's defense. Freshman Nicole Sanda had an outstanding performance with five shots in the match.
"This was a great way to finish the spring season," commented head coach Meridy Glenn. "We had great competition with teams representing four different conferences. We're playing good soccer and we're growing."
The Bearcats will host their annual Alumni match next Saturday, April 29th to officially close out their spring season. Kick off is set for 4 p.m. at Gettler Stadium.
