CINCINNATI, Ohio--University of Cincinnati senior Maria Pongonis will be named the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky Women's Sports Association College Volleyball Sportswoman of the Year, tomorrow night at the association's annual awards dinner.
The 13th annual dinner, held in partnership with the Anthony Munoz Foundation, will be held on Tuesday (April 25) at The Drawbridge Inn in Ft. Mitchell, Ky. The festivities will get underway at 7 p.m. A lengthy list of awards will be presented honoring Cincinnati-area natives for excellence in athletics.
The Sportswoman of the Year Award is presented to a woman playing either in the area or out, who exhibits excellence in athletics. Among the other considerations are academic standards, community involvement and leadership qualities. One winner is chosen per sport.
Pongonis (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) led the Bearcats in kills per game in 2005 with 3.66, while ranking second with 3.54 digs per game. For her outstanding play, Pongonis was tabbed a second team All-BIG EAST selection. In addition, Pongonis was named team most valuable player and was the recipient of the Stephanie Rosfeld Memorial Award, given to the Bearcat player who exemplified the positive qualities and love for the program shown by the late UC assistant coach.
