WORCESTER, Mass.---The University of Cincinnati rowing team enjoyed a fine performance in its first-ever BIG EAST Championship, as the Bearcats finished sixth overall in the nine-team field. The 2006 edition of the event was held on Sunday at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.
UC advanced to the grand final in four of the five races in which it entered. The sole crew that didn't make the grand final instead took first place in the petite final, as the Bearcats' varsity eight scored a two-second victory over Rutgers. Making up the winning boat were coxswain Liz Johnson, along with Sarah Lautenslager, Sarah White, Jessica Beebe, Elizabeth Tremblay, Jodie Lush, Sara Clayton, Lisa Teague and Lindsay Kemna. The crew finished in a time of 6:52.58.
The highlight in the grand finals for UC came from the second varsity four boat which finished fourth in 8:06.88. That boat was coxed by Melissa Patrick and included Joy Kramer, Beth Schoenfeld, Melissa Floro and Ashley Wolff.
"This was an amazing weekend for us and I couldn't be more pleased with our performance," said UC head coach Pam Mork. "This was easily our best regatta of the year. I think our team is really developing experience and figuring out how to race the most effectively. Throughout this year, we have really matured and are building on our race experience."
Notre Dame successfully became the BIG EAST Champions for the third straight year, accumulating 122 points as a team. Conference newcomer Louisville was second with 103, while the Bearcats earned 62 points.
UC will wrap up its 2005-06 season May 13-14, traveling to the NCAA Regionals in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
