PROVIDENCE, R.I.---University of Cincinnati freshman Steve Blevins has been named the BIG EAST Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week for his performance over the weekend at Louisville. Blevins shares the award with Georgetown freshman Darren Sizemore.
Against the Cardinals, Blevins spun a five-hit complete game shutout, the first of his career. The Louisa, Ky. native struck out four and walked three in the start, improving to 8-3 this season with the victory. The complete game was his second straight and Blevins has now pitched 12.2 consecutive scoreless innings.
Blevins' victory was also historic as he became Cincinnati's winningest freshman pitcher ever. His eight wins are one better than Bruce Raible's mark established in 1968.
Blevins becomes the second Bearcat hurler to earn BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors, joining Glen Simon who was tabbed on Feb. 20. Teammates Logan Parker (March 20) and Jon DeLuca (April 3) have also been honored this season by the BIG EAST as Conference Players of the Week.
At Louisville, the Bearcats won two of three games to take over sole possession of fourth place in the BIG EAST at 10-8. UC has an overall record of 27-16 heading into a Wednesday home doubleheader with Morehead State. Cincinnati will be back in BIG EAST action this weekend (May 5-7), travelling to Villanova.
