Nelson (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) has excelled for the Bearcats at both the plate and on the mound. He ranks fourth on the team in both hitting (.314) and RBI (36), while adding five home runs and a team-leading 14 doubles. On the mound, Nelson holds a 3-1 record with three saves in a team-high 20 appearances. In the classroom, Nelson has a 3.61 GPA, majoring in finance. This marks Nelson's second appearance on the All-District first team, as he was also honored in 2003.
With his first team selection, Nelson will now be included on the ballot for Academic All-America status. That squad will be revealed on May 30.
Muscenti (Chargrin Falls, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) has enjoyed a career season, hitting a personal-high .320 and knocking in 30 runs. He has started 49 games, all but one at second base, adding 43 runs and 12 doubles. Dating to the 2004 season, Muscenti has started 119 consecutive games in the UC infield. Muscenti is pursuing a degree in chemical engineering and has a 3.50 GPA. He was also chosen to the CoSIDA All-District second team last year.
District IV, into which UC falls, consists of NCAA Division I universities in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee.
This year's team was voted on by members of CoSIDA. To qualify, student-athletes must hold at least sophomore status, own a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.2, and be either a starter or key reserve for their team.
