B IGEAST.org: 11 BIG EAST Players Drafted
CINCINNATI, Ohio -- James White joined the growing list of Bearcat basketball alums to be selected in the NBA Draft when the 6-7 swing player was taken in the second round of the 2006 draft by the Portland Trail Blazers.
Portland, which made White the 31st pick of the draft, later traded him to the Indiana Pacers for two future draft picks.
White became the 10th Bearcat in the past 10 years to be drafted. Last year, Jason Maxiell was taken in the first round with the 26th pick by the Detroit Pistons.
Twelve Bearcats have been drafted since 1993, when Corie Blount was taken in the first round by the Chicago Bulls and Nick Van Exel was selected in the second round by the Los Angeles Lakers.
The 2000 NBA Draft was a rich one for Cincinnati as Kenyon Martin was the No. 1 selection of the entire draft, taken by the New Jersey Nets. DerMarr Johnson was taken with the No. 6 pick by the Atlanta Hawks and Pete Mickeal was the No. 58 pick of the draft by the Dallas Mavericks.
Six former Bearcats were on NBA rosters when the 2006 season concluded: Maxiell at Detroit, Danny Fortson, Seattle Super Sonics; Johnson and Martin, both with the Denver Nuggets; Ruben Patterson with the Portland Trail Blazers and Nick Van Exel with the San Antonio Spurs.
White averaged 16.3 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.0 assists last season, helping the Bearcats to a 21-13 campaign.
