CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Dan Hoard, the radio play-by-play voice of the University of Cincinnati football and men's basketball broadcasts the past six years, will return to that role in 2006-07.
Hoard, who left his position as sports director at WXIX-TV 19 to become the radio voice of the Pawtucket, R.I. Red Sox, will return to Cincinnati at the conclusion of the baseball season and resume his work on the Bearcat broadcasts on WLW-AM 700.
"I am thrilled to continue my association with Bearcats Athletics and the Big One - 700 WLW," said Hoard. "Between UC's BIG EAST affiliation and the completion of the Lindner Varsity Village, it is an exciting time to be a Bearcat. Plus, my nine-week old son Sam already has quite a collection of Bearcat attire that we look forward to adding to in the future."
In addition to calling the action on the broadcasts, Hoard also hosts the weekly call-in radio shows featuring the head coaches.
Hoard has been a focal point of Bearcat broadcasts since coming to Cincinnati from Syracuse, N.Y. in 1995. He served as UC's radio voice in 1996 and handled the play-by-play on UC local television football and men's basketball telecasts on FOX 19 from 1996-2000. He became the radio play-by-play voice in 2000.
Darryl Parks, Director of AM Operation for Clear Channel Cincinnati said, "700WLW will continue having Dan as one of the great personalities on the station. The past six years, Dan's voice, talent and expertise in Bearcats sports have made him a star. We are very pleased to have Dan join us for the bright future of the Bearcats on The Big One."
The 2006 season marks the 14th year that powerhouse WLW has served as the radio home of the Cincinnati Athletics. Since 2003, that relationship has continued under an agreement with the UC athletics program's multimedia rightsholder ISP Sports.
WLW's signal can be heard in 38 states and seven countries via terrestrial radio, and worldwide via XM Satellite Radio Channel 173. UC is the only school in the nation which can boast of its entire schedule of coach's shows, and regular season football & men's basketball games carried on satellite radio.
"I think we have the most talented and knowledgeable radio broadcast team in the BIG EAST," UC Director of Athletics Mike Thomas stated. "Dan is one of the nation's premier play-by-play announcers. His enthusiasm on the air will continue to energize the broadcasts of Cincinnati athletics and help us tell the Bearcats' story. Having longtime Cincinnati men like Dan, Jim and Chuck as part of the program is essential to our future as we respect the student-athletes and coaches who have helped build our program. Bearcats fans will see a new energy on our broadcast presentation this fall and I think they will be very pleased."
"Our goal in this selection was to identify a solid broadcast professional who wanted to come and immerse himself in UC athletics and in the incredible sports culture that is Cincinnati" added Senior Associate Director of Athletics Mike Waddell. "There is no better fit anywhere than Dan and we are excited that all of the particulars have been resolved to allow for his return. The University of Cincinnati is excited to be able to work with a talent like Dan and we look forward to many nights of listening to his call of Bearcats' victories on the powerhouse airwaves of WLW. Dan is going to be the narrator of many Bearcat BIG EAST championships and we are proud to have him back on board at this exciting time of UC Athletics."
Kelly has been a part of the Bearcats Football Broadcast Team since the 1990 season, replacing former Bearcat passing star Greg Cook. Jim is the son of Jim Kelly, who had been associated with UC for over 40 years--37 as an assistant coach and administrator. The senior Kelly had been a receiving star on the Sid Gillman-coached teams of the early 1950s. Jim Jr. followed suit in the mid-1970s, starting for three seasons, but played on a run-oriented team. Kelly is a Sales Executive with Aramark and is a member a local band that was formed of UC friends from his era that still performs, now infrequently, in the area, specializing in 70s music and musicians.
Machock has been associated with the University of Cincinnati Department of Athletics for the past 17 years, yet his association actually began much earlier, as a student and a member of the basketball teams of the late 1950s. Machock was a teammate of Oscar Robertson for one season before launching his coaching career at area high schools while still a student at UC. Machock later capped a three-decade coaching career at UC, returning as the Bearcats' volunteer coach in 1989. When the volunteer assistant coaching position was eliminated by the NCAA after the 2002 season, Machock became the analyst on the radio broadcasts, a position he has held since.
