NORTH PLAINS, Ore.---University of Cincinnati junior Hillery Wilson has qualified and will compete in the U.S. Women's Amateur Open next week. The event to be held at the Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club, gets underway with the opening round of stroke play on Monday (Aug. 7).
Wilson (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) is one of 156 players that will compete in the first two rounds. Following the conclusion of the second round, the 64 lowest-scoring players will advance to match play which gets underway on Wednesday, Aug. 9. Three rounds of match play will be held, leading up to the finals on Sunday, Aug. 13.
"This tournament is the pinnacle of events in amateur golf," said UC head coach Janet Carl. "To have Hillery qualify for this event is a continuation of the good play and hard work she has devoted to her game."
Wilson earned a spot in the Open through a qualifier in Cincinnati in July. Playing at the Cincinnati Country Club, Wilson shot a 75 to earn an invitation to North Plains. Prior to the qualifiers, a record 969 entries were filed, with Wilson making the 156-player cut.
By advancing to the event, Wilson becomes the second Bearcats women's golfer to play in a national tournament this summer. Teammate Allison Mayborg (Monroe, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) competed in the USGA Public Links Amateur Championships earlier this summer. At that event, Mayborg shot rounds of 77 and 84, missing the cut after the second round.
A daily update of Wilson's performance at the Open will be available by logging on to www.ucbearcats.com. Additional coverage can be seen on the Golf Channel each night from Aug. 9-13, airing from 7-9 p.m.
