This is the final of an eight-part series, previewing the University of Cincinnati football team as it prepares to open the 2006 season on Sept. 2 vs. Eastern Kentucky. In this installment, the Bearcats' kicking game previewed.
Kevin Lovell, who has led the team in scoring in each of the past two seasons, returns to handle the kicking chores. Kevin Huber, who saw action last year, and Brian Steel will continue their battle for the punter assignment. Their competition during spring drills improved the performance of each.
Patrick Farfsing is back for his fourth season as the long snapper, with sophomore Brad Bury working into the position. Senior Mike Daniels, junior Haruki Nakamura and sophomore Dominick Goodman are seasoned return specialists, though they may be challenged by incoming freshmen. Daniels has amassed nearly 1,000 return yards over his previous three seasons. Nakamura led last year's team in punt returns with his 8-yard average, while Goodman amassed the most kickoff return yardage.
"Special teams play needs to be the heartbeat of our team. All aspects of our kicking game have improved," UC head coach Mark Dantonio stated. "Lovell needs to have a great year, and we know we must create opportunities for him. Our punting game looked consistent in the spring. We will continue to develop big play return men."
