AKRON, Ohio -- Freshman Lisa Clark (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) scored the game-winner in the 85th minute, sending the University of Cincinnati women's soccer team to a 2-1 win against Akron in the first round of the Westfield Insurance Cup. The Bearcats will take on local rival Wright state in the championship match on Saturday, Aug. 19, at 5:30 p.m.
After a scoreless first half that was all but dominated by the Bearcats, UC got on the board in the 71st minute. Sophomore Jenn Johannigman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton), who led the Bearcats with six goals in 2005, scored from 30 yards out, beating Akron keeper Krystin Wilson to the far post with a powerful shot from just outside the box along the left side.
Akron knotted the score less than four minutes later. Heather Rains beat UC keeper Andrea Bouldin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Eastern Michigan) after taking a feed from Kate Ferrara, setting the stage for Clark's heroics.
With overtime looming, freshman Erin MacDonald (St. Catharine's, Ont./West Park Secondary) dribbled up the right side and sent a cross to the far post. After a scramble in front, Wilson came off her line, but Clark beat her to the ball and buried her shot to clinch the victory.
Fellow freshman Andrea Kaminski (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) played the first 45 minutes in goal, while Bouldin played the second half.
The Bearcats will kick off the regular season at home against regional rival Kentucky on Friday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m. at Gettler Stadium. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. Season tickets and Olympic Sports Passes are available now by calling 1-877-CATS-TIX or clicking here!
