August 27 is Meet the Team Night
WEST HARRISON, Ind. - University of Cincinnati junior running back Mike Daniels will miss the 2006 football season after suffering a season-ending injury in the Bearcats' intrasquad game on Tuesday. Daniels, a Cincinnati native who earned the Ohio Division I Offensive Player of the Year honors as a senior at Princeton High School, is scheduled to undergo surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee on Friday.
"The thing about Mike is that his attitude is contagious, he's been ultra-positive," Dantonio said. "He's good for morale and he's good to be around. He's got a redshirt available, so he'll be back."
Heading into the 2006 campaign, the 5-7, 185-pound Daniels was slated to be a part of the four-man rotation at running back for the Bearcats.
Head Coach Mark Dantonio added, "That was a position of depth for us, and it still is with the three guys battling and two quality freshmen there as well."
Daniels is listed seventh on UC's all-time list in kickoff returns (40) and eighth in kickoff return yardage (777). He finished third on the team in all-purpose yardage a year ago with 488 yards.
As a junior, he set a career high with 50 yards on 10 rushing attempts vs. Eastern Michigan in the season opener. He moved from wide receiver to running back prior to the 2004 campaign. Daniels played nine games at wide receiver as a true freshman. His top performance as a freshman cam at No. 9 TCU when he made two catches for 54 yards.
UC was on the field in full equipment for the morning practice. The team wore shells in the evening session.
The Bearcats wrap up their stay at Higher Ground with practice on Thursday morning. They return to campus on Thursday afternoon.
