CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Led by Preseason All-American Omar Cummings' second consecutive game-winning goal, the men's soccer team topped Bradley, 2-0, on Tuesday evening in the first match of a men's-women's doubleheader at Gettler Stadium. The Bearcats improve to 2-0-0 on the season, while the Braves fall to 1-1-1.
The Bearcats controlled the tempo and possession throughout the match and after a scoreless first half, Cummings got UC on the board in the 49th minute. The Preseason BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year bent a 35-yard free kick to the far post past Bradley keeper Mike Haynes for his second goal of the season.
The Bearcats kept the offensive pressure on and allowed only one scoring opportunity to the Braves offense. Grant Campbell played a ball of his chest in the box and had a chance to squeak a shot by UC keeper Mike Vessells in the 67th minute. His attempt clanged of the post and was cleared by the Bearcats.
The miss would prove costly, as Kenny Anaba clinched the match with his first goal of the season just four minutes later. Patrick Baxter intercepted a Bradley throw in along the sideline and fed a streaking Anaba, who lofted a perfectly placed shot over the head of the charging Haynes.
The Bearcats outshot the Braves, 15-4, and Vessells did not need to make a save to secure his ninth career clean sheet.
"I like the fact that we are scoring goals," said UC head coach Hylton Dayes. "I think we played really well defensivley and we were able to beat a very good team."
UC is next in action on Friday, Sept. 1, as the Bearcats take on the nation's second rank team, SMU at the SMU Radisson Invitational in . UC will play Florida International on Saturday, Sept. 2, in its second matchup of the tournament.
