CINCINNATI, Ohio---Lisa Spears, the highly successful head coach of the University of Cincinnati dance team has been bestowed the honor of Coach of the Month for September by the Universal Dance Association. During her tenure, Spears has guided UC to three consecutive national championships in the hip-hop division.
"I am so honored to receive this award and bring more recognition to the University of Cincinnati," Spears said. "The dancers I have been fortunate enough to work with over the years have been great and I look forward to more successful years here at UC."
The newly created UDA award is all-encompassing in that it covers coaches on junior high, high school, all-star and college levels.
The Bearcats made history in 2004 when they won the first-ever hip-hop national title at the College Cheerleading and Dance Team Championship, held annually in Orlando, Fla. UC went on to repeat the honor in 2005 and 2006.
Spears was a member of the UC Dance Team from 1991-94, before becoming the junior varsity coach in 1997. One year later, she took over the reigns of the varsity program and has led the team to top-10 national finishes in five of her eight years.
