SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati women's golf team will kick off its 2006-07 season, travelling to Simpsonville, Ky., just outside of Louisville, for the annual Napa River Grill Cardinal Cup, Sept. 18-19. UC returns its entire roster from last season, in addition to newcomer Katelyn Hiller, under the guidance of fifth year head coach Janet Carl. The Cardinal Cup marks the beginning of a six-event fall schedule, which includes a pair of contests at the Bearcats' home course, Elks Run, in Batavia.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: The annual Napa River Grill Cardinal Cup will bring together 13 schools from the eastern half of the United States for 54 holes of golf at the Cardinal Club. Action gets underway on Monday, Sept. 18 with an 8:30 a.m. ET shotgun start for the opening 36 holes. The final 18 holes begin at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Defending champion Georgia State is part of the field, which also consists of UC, Louisville, Augusta State, East Tennessee State, Eastern Kentucky, Kentucky, Maryland, Marshall, Middle Tennessee State, North Carolina-Wilmington, South Florida and Southern Miss. In addition, the Scandinavian Amateurs from Sweden will also be on hand, competing as individuals.
THE LINE-UP: Cincinnati will send seven golfers to the Cardinal Cup, including two of the squad's top three players from last year in juniors Hillery Wilson and Allison Mayborg. Joining the talented junior duo will be seniors Sarah Bires and Mya Pronschinske, sophomores Marianne Erb and Sarah Stamper and redshirt freshman Ashley Combs. UC will be without the services this season of sophomore Chelsa Dooley, last year's number three player, who will redshirt in 2006-07.
HOPING FOR MORE: Through just two seasons at Cincinnati, junior Hillery Wilson has already accomplished a great deal. As a Bearcat, Wilson has won five tournaments, set the school record for lowest round and the mark for lowest single season average. In addition, Wilson played in the U.S. Women's Amateur Open during the summer of 2006. This season, she will try to push her game to the next level in hopes of being in the running for a BIG EAST Championship and a berth in the NCAA Championships. Wilson enters the season with a career average of 77.4.
WELCOME TO THE TEAM: The lone newcomer on the Cincinnati roster this season is freshman Katelyn Hiller. Hiller joins the Bearcats from Valley High in West Des Moines, Iowa.
