BOWLING GREEN, Ohio---Geoff Newman sits just three shots off the lead as the senior opened the 2006-07 University of Cincinnati men's golf season with a round of 72 on Monday at the John Piper Intercollegiate. With only 18 holes to go, Newman is tied for fourth overall.

Rainy, windy and cold weather cut the opening day of the tournament from 36 to 18 holes. Newman took advantage and is only three behind Trey Bowling of Eastern Kentucky in the fight for medalist honors. Junior Alex Wenzel also enjoyed a strong performance, shooting a 73 to tie for seventh. The score is his lowest since joining the Bearcats from American University prior to last season.

The team standings show UC tied for sixth with a total of 305. Eastern Kentucky holds a six stroke advantage over Campbell in the battle for the team title at 288.

Play will resume with the final 18 holes on Tuesday with an 8 a.m. start.
