, - The University of men's soccer team won its third straight, a 3-1 decision against , on Wednesday night at Gettler Stadium. The Bearcats dominated the second half, scoring a pair of goals in the first 10 minutes of the stanza to take command.
The Bearcats (5-3-1, 2-2-0), who have not lost at home all season (4-0-0), got on the board first in the 30th minute. Preseason All-American Omar Cummings sent a corner kick into the box and off of the head of Brad Simpson. Noah Davidson flicked a header toward goal and Patrick Baxter finished the play with a header past Vikings keeper Kasey Gray, his first tally of the season.
A defensive breakdown just over three minutes later allowed to get back into the match. Nenad Stojakovic played the ball into Marco DiFranco, who served a perfect cross into the box. David Stewart found himself all alone in front of UC keeper Mike Vessells, and buried the cross for his fourth goal.
CSU played inspired in the first half, controlling in the midfield and posting nine shots and four corners. The Bearcats got 14 shots off in the half and created several scoring chances of their own, including a great run by Kenny Anaba that was ended by a takedown in the box. No penalty was awarded, however, and the Bearcats settled for a 1-1 tie at halftime.
Anaba, the reigning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, scored the game-winner just five minutes into the second half on a superb cross from Preseason All-American Omar Cummings. Cummings served a cross from outside the box on the left side onto the foot of Anaba, who buried a volley past Gray for his third goal of the season.
In the 55th minute, Anaba was again taken down in the box, but this time a penalty kick was awarded. Sam Miller took and converted the kick, his first goal of the season, to give UC a 3-1 lead.
UC outshot , 25-12, overall and 11-3 in the second half. The Bearcats have scored eight goals in their last three matches and have outshot their opponents, 60-30.
The Bearcats will continue their five-match homestand against on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m.
