WEST CHICAGO, Ill.---Sophomore Albert Fernandez shot consecutive rounds of 73 to lead the University of Cincinnati men's golf team on day one of the John Dallio Memorial, hosted by DePaul. Fernandez's 36-hole total of 146 leaves him just outside the top-10 in 11th with 18 holes remaining.
Fernandez's count, along with season-best rounds from three other golfers has the Bearcats in seventh place in the team standings with a score of 596. UC is only three shots out of a fourth-place tie between Wright State and Eastern Illinois. Northern Iowa has a slim two-stroke lead over DePaul in the battle for the top spot.
UC opened the tournament strong, as senior Geoff Newman and junior Alex Wenzel shot rounds of 70 and 71, respectively. Newman shows tied for 16th after day one with a total of 147, just one back of Fernandez. Joe Young rebounded from an opening round 82 to post a season-low 75 in round two.
The tournament concludes with the final 18 holes getting underway at 7:30 a.m. CT on Tuesday from the Prairie Landing Golf Club.
