SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati men's golf team will square off against local rival Northern Kentucky at the Elks Run Golf Course in Batavia, Ohio on Friday, Sept. 29. The 18-hole event will get underway with the first tee time set for 12:30 p.m. UC, behind the play of senior Geoff Newman and sophomore Albert Fernandez, will be trying to build on a 10th place finish at the John Dallio Memorial earlier this week.
ABOUT THE EVENT: Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky will square off at Elks Run Golf Course in what has been deemed the "Cross River Shootout." The unique event will not only crown an overall individual and team winner, but also an event winner. At the conclusion of the event, the top two players from each school's men's team and women's team will have their score combined to decide the winner of the Cross River Shootout.
THE LINE-UP: Nearly all of the Bearcats' roster will compete this week, with the only exception being junior Jacob Patterson who is recovering from mono. Senior Geoff Newman, who has gotten his season off to a fine start, has two top-20 finishes. The Cincinnati native leads UC with a 73.4 average and holds the lowest round of 70. Sophomore Albert Fernandez has also shined with all but one round under 75 and an average of 74.0. Playing for the first time this season will be junior Luke Underhill, sophomore Ryan Heinly and freshman Ryan Cahill.
GETTING TO ELKS RUN: To get to Elks Run from downtown Cincinnati, take 471 South into Kentucky and exit onto 275 East towards Batavia. Get off 275 on the Route 32 east exit towards Batavia. Take the first exit off of 32 for Batavia (labeled Main Street). Turn right at the bottom of the exit ramp and go across the bridge into Batavia. From there, take a right on Riverside Drive and look for the Elks Run sign. Turn left on Elklick Road and follow until you come to the entrance of the golf club on the left.
NEW LEADERSHIP: The Bearcats began this season with a change at the top as Doug Martin has replaced Sonny Rinala as assistant coach in charge of the men's program. Martin will add a great deal of experience to the team as he played on the PGA Tour from 1991-99 and was very accomplished as an amateur. In 1989, he was ranked as the top amateur player in the country and was also a three-time All-American at the University of Oklahoma. Professionally, Martin scored two tour victories and lost a five-hole playoff to Vijah Singh at the 1995 Buick Classic at Westchester. Currently, Martin is an instructor in the Cincinnati-area and is manager and part owner of The Golf Ranch in Burlington, Ky.
