CINCINNATI, Ohio - Despite dominating play for most of the match, Cincinnati came away with a 0-0 tie with Syracuse in women's soccer action on Friday night at Gettler Stadium. The Bearcats owned a 26-6 edge in shots, but could not crack the net in 110 minutes of play.
UC remained undefeated at home with the double overtime tie and are now 5-3-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the BIG EAST. The Orange saw their winless streak reach five as they carded their second-straight scoreless draw to run their record to 1-8-3, 0-3-1.
Ten of the Bearcats' 26 shots were on net and one hit the crossbar, but SU keeper Elizabeth Bennett-Hattan made 10 saves for her third shutout. Andrea Kaminski made three saves for UC to record her fourth clean sheet.
"It's our second year in the BIG EAST," said head coach Meridy Glenn, "but some of us still don't get it. We've gotten much better, but I am not satisfied with how we played. We played well enough to win, but no one in this league is going to roll over and give you a win."
The Orange were content most of the night to pack in their defense and counter if the opportunity arose. The Bearcats' best chances came from distance or from long balls played in deep.
Kristin May played a long cross to Melissa Bigg in the box in the 43rd minute that landed right on Bigg's foot, but the volley went high. It was May again in the 71st minute, ripping a shot from 30 yards out that banged off the crossbar.
SU's Jen Taormina had a few chances in the final six minutes of regulation, but shot wide twice and had the ball taken away from her in the box by Gigi Ernst with a minute left.
Just 1:15 into the first overtime, Becky Imhoff got open for the Bearcats outside the top of the box and fired a shot that Bennett-Hattan just was able to punch high.
Neither team got a shot off in the second overtime.
The Bearcats return to action on Sunday, Oct. 1 to host St. John's at 1 p.m. at Gettler Stadium.
