CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Bearcats allowed just one shot on goal, but it was all that mattered as St. John's defeated Cincinnati, 1-0, in women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Gettler Stadium. The loss snapped a six-match home unbeaten streak for UC.
Krystal Jalalian netted her second goal of the year at 64:20 to help the Red Storm end a four-match winless stretch and improve their record to 6-2-3 overall and 2-1-2 in the BIG EAST. UC fell to 5-4-2 and 1-2-1 with the loss.
The Bearcats owned a 15-5 edge in shots, including 6-1 in shots on goal, but could not get a shot past SJU keeper Jamie Beran. In the past two games, UC has outshot its opponents 41-11 but failed to score a goal.
"Again today we had the momentum in the first half but didn't make the keeper work very hard," said head coach Meridy Glenn. "We look good statistically, but we were not dangerous. We were predictable. We're playing hard enough; we just need to play smarter."
Despite the edge in shots, quality scoring chances were few and far between for both teams in a physical match that saw 31 fouls called. Much of the play took place in the midfield.
In the eighth minute UC's Kristin May had a free kick from 19 yards out that did not connect. Four minutes later Becky Imhoff had a corner kick bounce to her feet less than five yards from the net, but her contested shot rolled just outside the right post.
The second half saw St. John's step up its level of play, pushing forward more and allowing less penetration by the Bearcats attackers.
UC best chance came in the 63rd minute when May took a pass in the box directly in front of Beran, but the keeper was positioned perfectly and she made the save easily.
The Bearcats close out their home schedule next weekend when they host Georgetown on Friday at 7 p.m. and No. 13 Villanova on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. as part of the Bearcats Sports Festival. It is also Soccer Alumni Weekend for the men's and women's Bearcats squads. Information on events and tickets is available at GoBEARCATS.com.
