MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Two second-half goals were the difference as Marquette topped Cincinnati, 2-0, in women's soccer action at Valley Fields on Friday night.
Playing in 20 degree weather, the teams went into the lockerroom scoreless at halftime. UC had a 7-6 edge in shots and 4-1 in corner kicks.
Meghan Connelly cracked the scoreboard in the 58th minute, scoring off a pass from Katie Kelly. The Golden Eagles pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 78th minute when Connelly and Alison Loughrin assisted on a goal by Lauren Weber.
MU dominated play in the second half, owning a 10-3 lead in shots and holding the Bearcats without a corner kick.
"We had good shots and good looks. We just didn't score," said head coach Meridy Glenn. "I think we put our heads down a little after the first score. We didn't capitalize on the set pieces we had."
Laura Boyer made five saves for Marquette, as UC was held scoreless for the fourth time in the last five matches. Andrea Kaminski made five saves for UC.
The Bearcats, who fell to 6-6-2 overall and 2-4-1 in the BIG EAST, remain one point out of the final spot in the BIG EAST Tournament. MU climbed to 6-5-4, 4-3-1 with the win.
UC now makes the one-day trip from wintry Milwaukee to Tampa, Fla. to take on USF on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m.
