SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati women's golf team hosts its first of three home tournaments in 2006-07 on Oct. 16-17, with the playing of the Cincinnati Fall Invitational. The 36-hole, two-day event will take place at Elks Run Golf Course in Batavia. The Bearcats will be in search of their third tournament win in the last four events, after a 13th place tally at the Legends of Indiana Shootout.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: The Cincinnati Fall Invitational features squads from eight schools, with the Bearcats fielding both an "A" and "B" team. Toledo is the defending champion of the event, but will not be on hand to defend its title. Joining the Bearcats in the tournament field are squads from Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Kentucky, Ohio, Robert Morris, Southern Miss and Western Carolina. Action will get underway at 9 a.m. each day, with 18 holes to be contested in each. UC's Hillery Wilson is the defending individual champion of the event.
THE LINE-UP: The Bearcats will field a pair of teams for the Cincinnati Fall Invitational, a "Red" team and a "Black" team. Junior Hillery Wilson holds the top spot for the Red team and will be joined by senior Sarah Bires at No. 2, sophomore Marianne Erb in the third spot, classmate Sarah Stamper at No. 4 and junior Allison Mayborg in the final position. Team "Black" is headed by seniors Mya Pronschinske, Jackie Nimer and Sarah Ryan in positions 1-2-3. Rounding out the team are redshirt freshmen Ashley Combs and Alyssa Olson. Senior Emily Elliott will play in the tournament as an individual.
SHARING THE WEALTH: While Hillery Wilson has been the big winner for the Bearcats over the past two years, Allison Mayborg and Sarah Stamper got in the act at the Cross River Shootout vs. Northern Kentucky on Sept. 29. The UC duo shared the individual medalist award with scores of 75, marking the first win for both players in the college ranks.
HOPING FOR MORE: Through just over two seasons at Cincinnati, junior Hillery Wilson has already accomplished a great deal. As a Bearcat, Wilson has won six tournaments, set the school record for lowest round and the mark for lowest single-season average. She has gotten off to a great start in 2006, holding a team-best 74.8 average and matching her own school record with a round of 69 at the Lady Irish Invitational. On the strength of her win at the Lady Irish Invitational (Sept. 23-24), Wilson is ranked 236th nationally by Golf Week.
GETTING TO ELKS RUN: To get to Elks Run from downtown Cincinnati, take 471 South into Kentucky and exit onto 275 East towards Batavia. Get off 275 on the Route 32 east exit towards Batavia. Take the first exit off of 32 for Batavia (labeled Main Street). Turn right at the bottom of the exit ramp and go across the bridge into Batavia. From there, take a right on Riverside Drive and look for the Elks Run sign. Turn left on Elklick Road and follow until you come to the entrance of the golf club on the left.
