TAMPA, Fla. - The Cincinnati women's soccer team took a giant step toward securing a spot in the 2006 BIG EAST Tournament with a 1-0 win at USF on Sunday afternoon. Senior Becky Imhoff netted her team-leading fourth goal of the year to push UC past Seton Hall for fifth-place in the National Division.
The win improved the Bearcats' record to 7-6-2 overall and 3-4-1 in the BIG EAST. UC now has 10 points in the league standings, leapfrogging Seton Hall for the final spot in the tourney, which remained at eight points with a loss at Syracuse. The two face off on the final day of the regular season next Sunday at Seton Hall at Noon ET.
USF, which dropped consecutive home matches for the first time this year, fell to 6-8-1 overall and 3-6-0 in the BIG EAST.
The Bearcats went seven-deep off the bench playing in 80 degree temperatures just two days after playing in 20-degree Milwaukee. UC owned a 12-10 edge in shots and 6-3 in corner kicks.
All four of Imhoff's goals this year have been game-winners. This one came at 37:55 as Melissa Bigg slid a pass across the top of the box to the senior, who beat Casey Garrett in the left corner.
Andrea Kaminski made six saves in net for the Bearcats to earn her sixth shutout of the year. It was the fourth 1-0 win by UC this season.
"I thought we played very well in the first half and got a great goal by Imhoff," said head coach Meridy Glenn. "In the second half, I thought we were able to control play. It wasn't pretty soccer but it was a good performance all the way around. We just need to learn how to win by more than one goal."
The win was the 249th of Glenn's career, leaving her one shy of becoming the second female in Divison I women's soccer history to record 250 wins.
The final weekend of the regular season sees the Bearcats back on the road to face Rutgers on Friday, Oct. 20, before the pivotal match at Seton Hall on Sunday, Oct. 22.
