BATAVIA, Ohio---On a wet, cold day at Elks Run Golf Course, junior Hillery Wilson fought through the adverse conditions to grab first place after one round of the Cincinnati Fall Invitational. Wilson's play has also helped the Bearcats to a two-shot lead in the battle for the team title.
Wilson shot a round of 71 on her home course, marking her second-best score of the season. The round is good enough for a three-shot lead over Kandy Carland of Western Carolina with 18 holes to play. Malin Fryk of WCU is in third with after an opening round 75.
The team standings show the Bearcats, ranked 90th nationally by Golf Week, with a two-shot lead over WCU, which holds the 87th spot in the country, after a combined 303 on Monday. Southern Miss is a distant third at 323. Cincinnati's "B" squad is in eighth with a total of 336.
The Bearcats finished the opening round with four players in the top-10, including a trio in the top-five. Junior Allison Mayborg and sophomore Sarah Stamper are part of a four-way tie for fifth at 77. Sophomore Marianne Erb sits tied for ninth, one stroke out of fifth.
The final round of the Cincinnati Fall Invitational will tee off at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
